During Saxon times, the Manor of Horley came under the control of the Benedictine Abbey of St Peter at Chertsey, located along the River Thames. Later, ownership passed to King Henry VIII, who granted or sold the land to various individuals before it was transferred to Christ’s Hospital, London, in 1602. The arrival of the railway in 1841 led to a significant increase in the town’s population. Over time, Horley developed into a popular commuter town for London and a residential area for employees working at Gatwick Airport. Today, Horley offers a range of local attractions, including the Archway Theatre, which is uniquely located beneath the arches of the Victoria Road Railway Bridge.
