Aberaeron is a charming seaside resort town in Ceredigion, Wales, situated between Aberystwyth and Cardigan. The name Aberaeron means “mouth of the River Aeron”, with Aeron being a Welsh god of war. The town was planned and developed from 1805 by Rev. Alban Thomas Jones Gwynne. The harbour he built functioned as a port and supported a shipbuilding industry during the 19th century. Steamships continued to visit the harbour until the 1920s, after which it evolved into a small half-tide harbour for recreational craft. Aberaeron’s architecture is distinctive for rural Wales, featuring elegant Regency-style buildings arranged around a principal square overlooking the harbour. According to the 2001 census, approximately 70% of the town’s inhabitants speak Welsh. The town also has literary significance, with documented links to Dylan Thomas by local author David N. Thomas. The Dylan Thomas Trail passes through Ceredigion, including Aberaeron, and ends in New Quay. Another key attraction is Llanerchaeron, an 18th-century Welsh gentry estate on the outskirts of Aberaeron. Managed by the National Trust, it features a historic house, walled gardens, and a home farm, and is well worth visiting when in the area.
