Addlestone is situated in the borough of Runnymede, within the county of Surrey. The name Addlestone is believed to derive from “Attel’s Denu”, meaning the valley belonging to a Saxon named Attel. The town was recorded as Attelsdene in 1241, and by 1610, John Speed’s map shows Addlestone located just south of the River Thames. Addlestone is also famously mentioned in H.G. Wells’ novel The War of the Worlds, where the second of ten Martian invasion ships landed at Addlestone Golf Links. One of the town’s most notable landmarks is The Crouch Oak, an ancient oak tree believed to date back to the 11th century.
