In the 13th century, Horncastle was granted its market charter and became famous for its international horse fair, which continued until the 20th century. During the English Civil War in the 17th century, the Battle of Winceby, fought four miles outside the town, resulted in a significant victory for parliamentary forces led by Cromwell.
