Hitchin is a historic market town in the county of Hertfordshire, with an estimated population of 30,360. Hitchin is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a Royal Manor. By medieval times, it had become a thriving town along the banks of the River Hiz. Even today, Hitchin retains an atmosphere of peace and prosperity. The present church dates back to the 13th century and was built using wealth generated from the wool trade. Historically, the surrounding countryside supported sheep farming on the hillsides, while the flat lands produced wheat, barley, and lavender, helping trade flourish. Communications have always played a key role in Hitchin’s growth. Ancient trackways existed long before the Romans, and the Icknield Way, once an important trade route, still passes along the northern edge of the town and offers scenic walking routes. From the 17th century onwards, Hitchin became a popular staging post for London coaches. Many historic inns from that era, with their picturesque courtyards, remain visible today within Hitchin’s narrow streets. By the mid-19th century, the arrival of the railway transformed the town further. The Corn Exchange was built in the Market Place, and Hitchin soon became a major centre for grain trading. The latter half of the 20th century brought further improvements in transport and connectivity. Motorways significantly reduced travel times, bringing nearby towns such as Luton closer via the M1, and improving access through the A1(M). Today, Hitchin is renowned for its rich history and attractive architecture. Architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner once described Hitchin as, after St Albans, “the most visually satisfying town in the county.” The historic market, held every Tuesday and Saturday, has been a tradition for hundreds of years and continues to be a central feature of the town.
