Aberdeen is a historic city located in North-East Scotland. It originally developed from two separate burghs—Old Aberdeen and New Aberdeen—situated on the rivers Don and Dee. Over time, these merged into the modern city known today. Due to its distinctive buildings constructed from locally quarried grey granite, Aberdeen is often referred to as “The Granite City” or “The Silver City.” The city lies close to the North Sea, featuring a long sandy coastline, rugged cliffs, and surrounding landscapes of misty moors, tranquil lochs, and the mountainous Cairngorms National Park. Historically, Aberdeen has strong links to seafaring, shipbuilding, paper making, and whisky production. In more recent decades, the discovery of North Sea oil led to significant economic growth, earning Aberdeen the title “Oil Capital of Europe.” The city is well known for its impressive granite architecture, with landmarks such as Marischal College, one of the largest granite buildings in the world, and the Town House on Union Street. Granite from Rubislaw Quarry was even used in major structures such as the Houses of Parliament and Waterloo Bridge in London. Aberdeen is home to St Machar’s Cathedral and two major universities: the University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University. According to the 2010 census, the city has a population of approximately 217,100 residents, making it Scotland’s third most populous city. Aberdeen was granted Royal Burgh status by King David I in the 12th century. Culturally, the city hosts the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, attracting thousands of visitors from around the world.
